Christmas is a time for giving, and what better way to give back than to spend the day with children? Marriot Hotels recently threw a surprise Christmas party for the children, who attend at our Hlayisanani Early Childhood Development Centre in Alexandra.  
 

On 29 November 2018, the Constitutional Court will consider the constitutionality of the use of corporal punishment in the home. The Constitutional Court has prohibited corporal punishment in detention settings in 1995 and in schools in 2000, and this case presents the opportunity to prohibit its use in the home. At present, the common law defence of ‘reasonable chastisement’ practically allows parents to hit their children with the justification of corporal punishment being a form of discipline. The central question before the Constitutional Court is whether this practice should continue to be allowed or whether it needs to be prohibited since it violates children’s rights.

The 25^th of November marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. As Save the Children South Africa , we are calling for a collective effort to make South Africa safe, particularly for the most vulnerable members of our society - the children.

The young girl from Cape Town runs her Mini Sparkles sanitary towels project with the help of her family.

Save the Children South Africa CEO, Gugu Ndebele, has assumed her new role as the member of the Executive Committee of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children. The partnership is a place where all major stakeholder groups come together to channel their actions and resources to end violence against children (VAC).  
 

Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) calls on the South African Police Services to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that the man who allegedly raped a 7-year-old at a Dros restaurant in Pretoria last week, remains behind bars. We welcome the fact that the suspect will remain in custody while the police continue with their probe.

Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) has urged mothers in Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State, to exclusively breastfeed their infants during the first six months. This was part of the child-rights organisation’s awareness drive during this World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August).
